Heroes Ride (Veterans)

In Partnership with WNYHeroes, our program helps veterans build confidence and emotional regulation through riding and structured interactions with horses.
Set within a calm, nature-based environment, participants engage in meaningful experiences that combine horsemanship, mindfulness, leadership, and peer connection.
The program may include:
-
Ground-based horse interaction and grooming
-
Horsemanship and communication skill-building
-
Adaptive riding and mounted work when appropriate
A Trauma-Informed & Community -Focused Approach
Horses provide immediate and nonjudgmental feedback, helping participants develop trust, awareness, emotional regulation, and confidence through experience rather than conversation alone. The Veterans Program is intentionally designed to support the whole person — emotionally, physically, and socially.
The program operates through a small-group cohort model, allowing veterans to build meaningful peer connections while progressing through a structured 12-week experience supported by equine professionals and a licensed psychologist.
Participants may experience:
-
Reduced stress, anxiety, and isolation
-
Improved emotional regulation and resilience
-
Increased confidence and self-awareness
-
Stronger communication and leadership skills
-
Physical engagement and activity
-
A greater sense of community and belonging
Unlike traditional programs focused solely on discussion, participants actively build skills, confidence, and measurable progress through hands-on horsemanship experiences.
What a Session Looks Like

Each weekly session is approximately 2 hours and is intentionally structured to create both safety and meaningful growth. Participants are guided at their own comfort level, with no prior horse experience required.
Throughout the program, participants will:
• Learn the fundamentals of horseback riding through structured weekly lessons
• Develop horsemanship skills, including grooming, tacking, horse care, and understanding equine behavior
• Participate in groundwork exercises that build confidence, communication, trust, and leadership
• Experience equine-assisted activities designed to promote mindfulness, emotional wellness, and personal growth
• Work together on a timber-frame building project, constructing a pergola and experiencing the pride and accomplishment that comes from creating something lasting with their own hands
• Become part of a community that values connection, purpose, service, and support
The program mirrors many aspects of Nirvana Equestrian’s proven riding curriculum while being thoughtfully tailored to the unique experiences and strengths of our veteran community.
Whether participants arrive with horse experience or are meeting a horse for the first time, Heroes Ride provides an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover the powerful connection between horses, people, and purpose.
Together, we ride.
Together, we build. Together, we heal.
