Samantha Bonano, Founder

Samantha Bonano, the founder of Nirvana Equestrian, is the driving force behind a wellness-centered equestrian program that nurtures confidence, emotional regulation, resilience, and meaningful connections through horses. With passion for riding that began at the age of eight in Clarence, New York, her lifelong bond with horses has shaped her vision and approach. Samantha combines her extensive experience in executive leadership and strategic coaching with therapeutic equine insights, having previously served as CEO in healthcare and life sciences. As a Certified Yoga Instructor, she integrates holistic practices into her work, further enriching the transformative experience she offers.

Kamden Bonano, Junior Instructor & Camp Leader

Meet Kamden Bonano, Junior Instructor, camp leader and an integral member of the Nirvana Equestrian family. As Samantha's son and brother to Kai, he has been instrumental in building Nirvana Equestrian into a vibrant community that embodies their passion for horses. Growing up on the farm, Kamden has developed a natural connection with horses and brings a joyful spirit to his work enriching the experiences of everyone around him. Certified by the American Red Cross, he plays a vital in supporting lessons, especially with younger riders, affectionately dubbed the “young cowboys.” His warm demeanor makes him a favorite campers, and as a three-time World Champion with his horse,iera, their bond showcases the true essence of teamwork and dedication.

Catherine Cook-Cootone, Ph.D.-Equine Therapist

Catherine is a licensed psychologist, equine-assisted therapist (ARCH, HERD), yoga teacher, and Full Professor at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. Her work focuses on embodiment, self-regulation, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, yoga, and equine-assisted therapy. She is the author of 15 books and more than 100 scholarly publications related to eating disorders, trauma, mindful self-care, and embodied healing. Dr. Cook-Cottone is the founder of Blue Horse Equine Therapy, where she integrates horses, nature, mindfulness, and relational approaches to support healing and personal growth. She received the American Psychological Association’s Citizen Psychologist Presidential Citation in 2018. 

Dark and Stormy (Storm)

Meet Dark and Stormy, affectionately known as "Storm," a Baroque Pinto Gelding born on August 30, 201. As the first horse of Nirvana Equestrian and Samanthaano’s heart horse, Storm plays a vital role in the essence our barn. This impressive cross between a Friesian and a warmblood showcases both power and elegance, excelling in various disciplines, from English and western riding to cart pulling and trick training. With a reserved yet curious personality, Storm builds deep connections with those who approach him with patience and authenticity, making every interaction a rewarding experience.

Love Me Tender (Elvis, Pony, Puppy)

Meet Love Me Tender, affectionately known as "Elvis our charming small pony gelding born in March2023. With his spirited personality and irresistible charm, quickly became a beloved member of the Nirvana Equestrian family. Though he's still the early stages of training, he's already learning to drive, pull cart, and has been gently ridden by eager students. Perfect for riders, Elvis brings comfort and curiosity, making every interaction delightful experience.

Kai Bonano, Junior Instructor & Camp  Leader

Kai Bonano is a Junior instructor and Camp Leader at Nirvana Equestrian, playing an essential role in the Nirvana Equestrian family. As Samantha’s son and Kamden’s brother, he has been instrumental in shaping the farm into what it is today, growing alongside the program at every stage. With a deep love for animals and a natural talent for connecting with them, Kai's journey began with a desire for a horse, evolving from trail riding to the show world His partnership with his horse, Moon, exemplifies the discipline, organization, and trust that define Kai both in and out of the saddle, as he continually applies his knowledge of horse care and training to enhance his riding horsemanship.

Mark Warner, Adventure Learning Coordinator 

Mark Warner brings over 30 years of diverse experience in education, coaching, law enforcement support, security operations and mounted public safety service. Currently a member of the Erie County Sheriff’s Reserve Mounted Unit, he plays a crucial in public safety operations, including mounted patrol and community engagement. With a rich background as a Physical Education teacher and coach, Mark excels in motivation, instruction, and leadership development. Additionally his certification in adventure-based counseling through Project Adventure, Inc. enables him to effectively support veterans and adults dealing with PTSD, fostering growth through experiential learning and teamwork.

Knight (Kiera)

Meet Kiera Knight, a stunning part-bredian mare born on April 8, 9. With a powerful yet gentle presence, Kiera joined Nirvana Equestrian in June 2024 as Kamden’s horse, embarking on a remarkable journey from limited riding experience to becoming a three-time World Champion. Known for her affectionate and curious nature, she eagerly greets everyone at the gate, always seeking connection and attention. Kiera embodies the majestic beauty of Friesians while offering a sensitive, soulful presence that her a beloved favorite among riders and visitors alike.

Fly Me to the Moon (Moon)

Fly Me to the Moon, affectionately known as "Moon," is a cherished paint gelding born on October 6, 2012. He joined the Nirvanaquestrian program in 2024 from Ocala, Florida, as the next step in Kai's hunter/jumper journey. Initially reserved, Moon has blossomed into one of the barn's most reliable and friendly horses, often the first to greet everyone with his calm demeanor. With a love for jumping and a strong partnership with Kai, they have multi-time champions, showcasing the trust and consistency that define their bond.
